Educational institutions open early, close late, have weekend hours, and must heat and cool the teachers and students. Many have become increasingly aware of not only the impact upon the environment, but as budgets are decreased nation-wide, the sheer cost of operating a school. As schools across the United States close their doors due to operating costs, it is a blessing to read about Loyola Elementary, right here in the South Bay, that has cut its operating costs, increased efficiency, and created a sustainable system!
Loyola Elementary is part of the Los Altos Unified School District and completed a modernization of their original 1948 building and was featured on the Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS). Through utilizing new technologies and the natural environment, LE was able to gain control of their old building, mainly through:
• Taking advantage of natural sunlight and controlling it with “clerestory windows that function both to bring in additional daylight and as part of the stack ventilation system.”
• Installation of solar panels
• A new and innovative HVAC system that regulates internal and external air. “The EMS system signals a motor to open the windows when air temperatures are appropriate. The stack effect then draws fresh air in from louvers low on the outside walls. This innovative system replaces the fans of economizer cycles on HVAC equipment with a single action of opening the window.” Ingenious, huh?
Now, not all schools have the ability and funding to completely modernize the building, but steps are being taken to conserve paper and water. Wikis and Moodles are created for use in the classroom to post assignments and readings, as well as foster discussion. More recycling bins are available for paper, plastics, and aluminum and recycled products are chosen for supply paper and binders. More than anything else, initiatives focus on teaching sustainability in the classroom and how to be ecofriendly everyday, such as Sustainable San Francisco State University, a program that is currently revamping the entire campus!
